A Message from our Chair: Next Steps

Some of our board (left to right): Nathan Sparling (Chair), Jo Gibney, Jan Pimblett and Peter Gracey.

Every new charity has to ensure it has a unique vision that is future proof before we can get down to work.

After our successful Founder’s Appeal, which ensured we reached the financial threshold to be eligible to apply for charity status, I’ve been leading our Trustee Board through an intense Governance Review to ensure that Stay Brave UK has strong governance to allow our team to work on behalf of victims, survivors and those at risk of domestic and intimate abuse.

Our Governance Review has had a singular main aim to ensure that Stay Brave UK has strong governance and a strong board to take us forward through charity registration and building a financially sustainable organisation. Having established the Governance Review, I instructed a Governance specialist to get to work to help the Board. I’m grateful that he was able to waive his fees to help Stay Brave UK during the process as a donation.

We will go forward from this process with strong governance with an effective Board that backs up the work of Alex and his team, delivering our aims and communicating our message. We have a great opportunity to influence new legislation, with a Domestic Abuse Bill having been proposed in the latest Queen’s Speech, and continuing building our relationships with each parliaments.

Since the Appeal, our team have also been getting to work developing plans to implement our first projects, including our education initiative and our sign-posting directory. They have also developed relationships with national organisations such as the NCVO & Small Charities Coalition. All while continuing to raise awareness for those who think they are voiceless.

Walking Brave will also be taking place in August – a ten-mile trek across London to symbolise the journey survivors take while asking for help. Something that seems easy but when you’re in the thick of it is harder than we think. If you can make it then please sign up!

Stay Brave UK exists to give a voice to people who conventionally aren’t able to access support services. Our Governance will reflect that, making our Trustee Board accountable to those who have a moral stake in our work.

We also love to hear from our supporters. So, if you have questions, qualms or queries – please get in touch with us and we’ll be more than happy to help.

As Chair of the Board, I appreciate your patience and support as we ready the organisation for a lifetime of working for you.
