Sharing your Vlog

Here's a easy step-by-step guide on how to vlog for us!

Before we Start...

Are you feeling okay?

These guidelines are for people who are feeling well enough to tell their story. If you’re not sure you feel up to it yet, or need to talk to someone right now, visit our helplines page.

We do get a lot of submissions so please bear with us and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

Step One: Read these lists...

It's important that your vlog fits with the format of what we already have. Make sure you follow these dos and dont's, or we might not be able to publish your story:

Do's

  • Keep it to about 3 minutes

  • Talk straight to the camera about your personal experience

  • Read our blogging guidelines before you start

  • Record in a quiet and light place, where we can see you and hear you

  • Have your camera landscape!

Don'ts

  • Send us anything over 4 minutes

  • Include copyrighted material (e.g. music, graphics)

  • Add on-screen text (we can add this in the Stay Brave style if we need to)

  • Add special effects or cutaways

  • Describe specific details or trigger/graphic descriptions

  • Hold your camera portrait

Unfortunately we cannot publish poetry, music or creative writing pieces.

Step Two: Grab a camera and decide what to say...

There's no need for a professional camera, just use any device you have.

  • Does your phone have a camera?

  • Is there one built into your laptop or desktop computer?

  • Does anyone in your family have one you can borrow?

Now you can decide what you'd like to talk about. It could be that you talk about your story, how it made you feel, what you did afterwards, what services did you approach - try to finish with how are you now.

It might be helpful to write down what you'd like to say, or practice in front of a mirror?

If you're unsure about what it will mean to have your selfie online, for example who will be able to see it and what you should and shouldn't say, take a look at Mind's information on How to stay safe online.

We'd also love it if you could:

Step Three: Find a quiet place and start filming!

Find yourself a quiet place and make your selfie. It doesn't have to be in your living room or bedroom. As long as you make sure there's enough light for us to see you and it's quiet enough for us to hear you.

Remember if you're using your phone, make sure you're holding your camera sideways.

Don’t feel like you have to get it done in one go, have as many tries as you like. If you don't like what you've done feel free to do it as many times as it takes for you to feel okay with it.

Most importantly - be yourself! We want to get to know your story and your personality will help with that.

Step Four: Send us your Vlog and we'll do the rest!

Wait! Have you double checked your video passes our Do's and Don'ts?

Now that you've got it down on video it's time to send it over to us. Most are too big to send via email normally so you'll either need to compress it into a .ZIP file or send to us a link to it over a sharing service like GoogleDrive, Dropbox or OneDrive

You can then send it to us at stories@staybrave.org.uk

Soon as we have received your video we'll take a look, tidy it up if we need to and add anything that'll make it stand out more, and we'll let you know when it'll be available.

If at any time you'd like us to take it down we will. However, with the way the internet works, remember as soon as it is uploaded we will not be able to guarantee it is completely gone.
